I love reading, so any time I come across origami bookmarks, I give them a try. Now, this bookmark is a simple and traditional design that I came across while browsing through David Petty's collection of origami designs.

The origami is made from a third of a square sheet of paper. So that basically meant I could make 3 bookmarks from one square! Cutting it into thirds was fairly simple, because it does not have to be perfectly measured. So I just eye-balled the approximate point and cut along that.

I love reading and, consequently, love collecting bookmarks. But since it was Valentine's Day a couple of days back, I wanted to make heart shaped bookmarks. So off I went, making a whole bunch of these heart bookmarks for everyone I know! Wonderful V-Day gift for a book lover, huh?

The bookmarks are pretty easy to make, thanks to the tutorial by Jo Nakashima, who is also the creator of this model. They are made from a rectangle in the ratio 1:2 but from the tutorial, I understand any rectangle will work just fine.

This origami bear head bookmark is designed by Klaus-DieterEnnen and isn't very difficult to fold. Duo-coloured paper with brown and black might work out very well I think. Brown for the head and black for the little nose.

The diagram starts with a square base (Instructions).

I have previously made a butterfly bookmark designed by Grzegorz Bubniak. And today, I tried out his elephant bookmark, which clearly shows an elephant's head. It is quite easy to make out the ears, trunk and tusks. I like the colour change in the tusks.

The bookmark works best with duo coloured paper - grey and ivory would be the most ideal colour choice, in which case the elephant would be in grey and the tusks in ivory. I have used a 4.5 inch square which resulted in a bookmark that measured 2.5 inches from head to trunk tip and 2.75 inches from ear to ear. The size was ideal to use in books :)

When the bookmark is inserted in a book and the book is closed, only the ears can be seen outside the book end. This, I felt, was better than the butterfly bookmark, where more than half the bookmark is visible, which makes it very easy to crush it! In the elephant bookmark, since only the ears are visible, and that too a pre-creased end, we would, in most probability, end up folding the ear along those creases.
